The chic
beachside suburb of Avalon is jealously guarded by locals,
desperate to keep it's attractions a secret from the rest
of Sydney. The former sleepy village is now a hive of activity
buzzing with café's, restaurants, gourmet delis and
an array of specialty shops.
There
is much to warrant the effort of a city day trip or weekend
away, with the logical place to start being the beach. Avalon
Rockpool is washed out by the ocean daily and is said to be
one of Sydney's cleanest natural ocean pools. Clareville Beach
on the western foreshores of the peninsula offers picnic facilities
and is a great place to watch the sun set.
For the
shop-a-holic, Avalon offers a range of varied and interesting
clothing, giftware, homeware and bookshops. If food is your
passion, there are no shortage of café's and restaurants
offering both local and international cuisine.
For those
searching for quieter pursuits, Bangalley Head off Marine
Parade in North Avalon is the highest point of Sydney's northern
coastline and offers spectacular views across Avalon and north
to Whale Beach.
Angaphora
Reserve is an area of natural bushland which has been preserved
by committed locals as a corridor for wildlife, in particular
the local koala population.
As the sun sets, head back to the village
to catch a flick at the Avalon Cinema or indulge in some fine
wining and dining locally travel a couple of minutes north
to Careel Bay, Whale Beach or Palm Beach.
